September 10 is World Suicide Prevention Day: The number of suicides in Afghanistan is alarmingly increasing
Data collected from government hospitals and clinics across Afghanistan showed that suicide attempts among women have increased over the past two years.
United Nations officials and human rights activists have warned of an increase in the number of women committing suicide in Afghanistan. They have explicitly linked these measures to the Taliban’s restrictions on women, including bans from education and work, bans from entering parks, bathrooms and other public spaces.
Women and girls make up the majority of those who die by suicide or are treated after a suicide attempt. In general, women account for more than three-quarters of suicides and survivors treated.
According to global statistics and rankings, Afghanistan has been the most dangerous and worst country for women. Despite this, with the reintroduction of the Taliban, the challenges and limitations of life for women have increased, and women in this country do not even enjoy their basic rights to life and human rights.
