Afghan Envoy Urges UN to Recognize Gender Apartheid
Nasir Ahmad Faiq, Afghanistan’s representative to the UN, has called for “gender apartheid” to be officially recognized as a crime against humanity. Speaking at a diplomatic committee, he highlighted the systemic erasure of women from public life under the current regime.
Faiq described the situation in Afghanistan as a reality of widespread human rights violations, including arbitrary detentions and forced displacement. He noted that women and girls are the primary targets, stripped of their rights to education and work through official decrees.
The envoy argued that existing legal frameworks fail to address such comprehensive institutional oppression. He urged member states to draft a binding convention that specifically criminalizes these acts and ensures justice for the victims of gender-based persecution.
