Denmark’s representative in the United Nations: Afghan women journalists are resisting “tyranny” with their media activity.
The representative of Denmark at the United Nations said that Afghan women journalists resist “oppression” on a daily basis and risk their lives to prepare media content. On Tuesday, a meeting about the situation of female journalists in Afghanistan was held at the UN headquarters. In this meeting, a number of female Afghan journalists spoke about the situation of female journalists in Afghanistan under the control of the Taliban. This meeting was held in continuation of the 68th round of meetings of United Nations Women.Denmark’s representation in the United Nations wrote on the X channel that the meeting discussed how the international community can support female journalists in Afghanistan under the control of the Taliban.Like other areas of women’s life and activities, the Taliban has imposed restrictive laws regarding women’s media activities. In general, the media under the Taliban rule are under the knife of censorship and in some cases it has been reported that the Taliban authorities check the content of the publications of these institutions before publication. The Taliban has ordered the media to have masked female presenters appear on TV programs and, in another case, has banned the broadcasting of women’s voices in Helmand.Previously, the Center of Afghan Journalists said that in more than two years of Taliban rule in Afghanistan, at least 14 orders were issued and implemented on how the media and journalists work, which seriously limited the freedom of the media.According to this center, some of the Taliban’s restrictions have targeted women in particular. Banning women from interviewing men or banning programs in a shared environment with men also includes the Taliban’s restrictions on women’s media activities.Due to these restrictions, a large number of female journalists have been forced to give up this job. Another number of them have also migrated to far and near countries.
