Afghanistan: WFP provides Kash and Non-Kash assistance to 12,754 families

The World Food Programme (WFP) has distributed cash and non-cash assistance to 12,754 families in the Afghan provinces of Nangarhar, Laghman, and Samangan, according to local Taliban authorities.

Moulai Pasandullah Mujahid, head of the Taliban’s Department of Rural Rehabilitation and Development in Nangarhar, said that WFP distributed six items of food to 2,390 needy and affected families by natural disasters.

Meanwhile, WFP distributed nearly five million Afghanis in cash to 1,493 families in Laghman province. Moulai Rahimullah, a Taliban official, said that each needy family was given 3,200 Afghanis, for a total of four million, 777,400 Afghanis.

On the other hand, the Taliban’s Department of Rural Rehabilitation and Development in Samangan issued a press release saying that food assistance from WFP, with technical cooperation from the Social Empowerment Institute (ASIO), has been distributed to 4,109 families in the Dara-i-Suf District of the province.

The assistance includes wheat, rice, vegetable oil, pulses, and salt. WFP has been providing humanitarian assistance to Afghanistan since 1963, and is currently providing assistance to over 20 million people in the country.

The assistance comes as Afghanistan is facing a severe humanitarian crisis, with millions of people in need of food, water, and shelter. The crisis has been exacerbated by the Taliban’s takeover of the country in August 2021, which led to the withdrawal of foreign aid and the collapse of the Afghan economy.
