Zabihullah Mujahid, the spokesperson for the Taliban group, stated in an interview with Tabnak news agency in Saratan 1403 (June 2024) that Iran should recognize the Taliban and prioritize this issue. He added that the Taliban expects Iran to have more interactions with them regarding recognition compared to other countries.

Referring to the Helmand River water treaty of 1351 (1972), Mujahid said that when resources and reserves are available in Afghanistan, Iran’s water share will be given based on this agreement. He also mentioned that each country should regulate its relations with the Taliban based on its own interests.

The Taliban spokesperson emphasized that issues such as the formation of a government, the type of governing system, and the inclusion or exclusion of different ethnic groups in the government belong to the Afghan people, and other countries should not interfere in these matters. He stated that the Taliban desires a “unified Afghanistan with a single government.”
