UN: Over 2.8 billion people worldwide face inadequate housing
The United Nations has stated on the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty that over 2.8 billion people globally face inadequate housing conditions or homelessness. On Saturday, October 17, the organization emphasized that poor and marginalized individuals are disproportionately affected by the lack of adequate housing, which is a major barrier to escaping poverty. This year’s theme for the day is “Safe Homes for All,” aiming to highlight the importance of securing safe and adequate housing as a human right and a cornerstone of human dignity.
The UN also stated that providing adequate housing is directly linked to the Sustainable Development Goals, including ending poverty, reducing inequalities, creating sustainable cities, and promoting peace and justice. The organization has called on governments to adopt comprehensive policies to address the housing crisis.
