South Korea Pursues Regular Arctic Shipping Route
Following the completion of a round-trip journey by a container ship via the Arctic route to Europe, South Korea is looking to establish a regular shipping service on this sea lane. According to Reuters, the vessel “Pan-Star Acro” docked at the port of Busan on Sunday, October 11, after a 50-day voyage. South Korean officials stated that the Arctic route could reduce the typical sea travel time to Europe by about one-third.
South Korean President Lee Jae-myung has made Arctic shipping a priority, and officials hope to launch regular services on the route by 2030. However, the project may cause friction with Western allies who wish to maintain Russia’s isolation, as the route requires Russian cooperation.
