Former BBC journalist Andrew North has disappeared in Kabul. The war correspondent, who has reported from Baghdad and Beirut, has been working as an independent journalist and with the UN inside Afghanistan.

On Friday, some of his colleagues stated that he had been detained along with eight other foreign nationals in Kabul.

Negotiations between United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) and officials in Kabul are said to have begun to secure their release.

UNAMA has not yet officially confirmed the news.

Officials in the current government have not yet commented on the matter.

Media outlets quoted former Vice President Amrullah Saleh as saying that nine western nationals had been kidnapped by the ruling group in the country.

Recently, mysterious kidnappings and detentions have been reported in various parts of Afghanistan.
