Former U.S. President Donald Trump has reversed a decision to livestream the execution of Nidal Malik Hasan, the perpetrator of the deadly 2009 shooting at the Fort Hood military base. The decision comes after widespread bipartisan backlash against the Pentagon’s initial plan.

Under the new decision, victims’ families will be able to view the execution in person. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth had announced last week that Hasan’s execution by firing squad would be “public” and available for people to watch. The plan drew sharp condemnation from politicians and retired military officers.

Critics warned the move could turn Hasan into a “martyr” for terrorist groups and serve as a “recruiting tool for future terrorists.” Nidal Hasan, an Army psychiatrist, killed 13 people when he opened fire on fellow soldiers in 2009. During his trial, he said he carried out the attack to protect members of the Taliban in Afghanistan.
