Increasing family violence in Afghanistan

After August 15, 2021 and the return of the Taliban to power; Women were once again marginalized. All the achievements of women were lost. Female employee and student stayed at home. The space was opened for opportunistic misogynistic men and women are once again experiencing an intense period of domestic violence. The creation of a misogynistic government system, the closing of safe houses, the abolition of the ministries of women’s affairs and the human rights commission, intensify violence against women.
Female employees are no longer able to meet their financial needs and ask for assistance from the men in the family, which sometimes leads to psychological violence.
The female students who stayed at home due to the closing of the schools have an unknown fate. They say that their families blame them for the unknown educational future and wasted all the education expenses, and consider marriage as the best option for them.
If forced marriages are imposed on students who fail to study, the peak of domestic violence will occur, which will lead to consequences such as running away from home, suicide, and psychological problems.
In a UN report; the situation of female victims in Afghanistan is considered unfortunate because with the closing of safe houses, support networks for women victims of violence have been destroyed.
The introduction of the new law on hijab prepares the ground for the escalation of domestic violence because it determines men to be in control of women’s dressing and women will never have the right to complain because this is the official law of the patriarchal country of Afghanistan.
As a result, the situation of vulnerable women is critical; because there is no authority to complain. Violence against women is not registered and reported, and the perpetrators are not punished.
