Caravan of Pakistani cleric Maulana Fazlur Rehman attacked in Dera Ismail Khan
The caravan of Maulana Fazlur Rehman, the leader of the Jamaat-e-Islami party in Pakistan, was attacked on Sunday in the Dera Ismail Khan district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province.
Mufti Abrarul Haq, a spokesman for Maulana Fazlur Rehman, confirmed the attack and said that no one was injured.
Maulana Fazlur Rehman was on his way to attend the wedding of his son when the attack took place. He was traveling in a convoy of vehicles when gunmen opened fire from both sides of the road
The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa police said that the attack took place on York Hall Plaza in Dera Ismail Khan. Maulana Fazlur Rehman’s vehicle was stopped at a petrol station when the gunmen opened fire.
Maulana Fazlur Rehman had warned the Pakistani security agencies on Saturday that they would be held responsible if any attack took place on him.
The attack on Maulana Fazlur Rehman is the latest in a series of attacks on political leaders in Pakistan. In December 2023, an attack on the convoy of former Prime Minister Imran Khan killed two people and injured several others.
The Pakistani government has condemned the attack on Maulana Fazlur Rehman and promised to bring the perpetrators to justice.
The attack is a worrying sign of the growing political instability in Pakistan. It is important for the government to take steps to protect political leaders and ensure that they can safely carry out their work.
