Afghan Journalists in Iran and Pakistan Face Harassment, Deportation

A report by the Afghan Journalists Safety Committee (AJSC) has found that Afghan journalists living in Iran and Pakistan face a number of challenges, including harassment, deportation, and detention.

The report, which was released on January 1, 2024, found that more than 200 Afghan journalists and their families in Pakistan are facing the threat of deportation. The situation has worsened since Pakistan announced a new policy of deporting undocumented migrants.

The AJSC also found that many Afghan journalists in Iran are concerned about the safety of their daughters if they are deported to Afghanistan. The Taliban, which took control of Afghanistan in August 2021, has cracked down on freedom of expression and has targeted journalists.

The AJSC is calling on the international community to help Afghan journalists who are seeking asylum. The committee is also calling on Iran and Pakistan to stop deporting Afghan journalists.
