Taliban Reopen Three Schools in Ghazni and Laghman

The Taliban-led government in Afghanistan has reopened three schools in the provinces of Ghazni and Laghman.

In Ghazni, the Ministry of Education said that two schools in the Deh Yak district had been rebuilt with the support of the COAR, a non-profit organization that works to improve education in Afghanistan. The first school, Shagalkhil, was repaired at a cost of $21,000 and includes one classroom and six classrooms. The second school, Wali Baba, was rebuilt at a cost of $81,500.

In Laghman, the Taliban-appointed governor said that the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) had built a new girls’ school in the Alinagar district. The school cost $352,000 to build and includes 12 classrooms, four administrative offices, a computer lab, a clean water system, a perimeter wall, and other facilities.

The reopening of the schools is seen as a positive step by the Taliban, which has been criticized for its restrictions on girls’ education. However, it is unclear whether the schools will be open to all girls, including those above the sixth grade. The Taliban has said that it will allow girls to go to school up to the sixth grade, but it has not yet announced a policy on girls’ education beyond that.

The reopening of the schools is also a sign of the Taliban’s growing cooperation with international organizations. The COAR and the UNHCR are both working to improve education in Afghanistan, and their support for the Taliban-led government is a sign that they are willing to work with the Taliban on issues of common interest.
