Afghanistan: Over 200 Afghan Prisoners Released from Iranian Prisons

The Taliban’s representative office in Nimruz province said on Friday that more than 200 Afghan prisoners had been released from prison in Iran and handed over to Taliban officials in Nimruz.

Yar Mohammad Haqyar said that the individuals had been imprisoned in Iran for “not having legal documents.”

Haqyar also added that 193 Afghan prisoners had been released from Iranian prisons and handed over to Afghanistan in the previous week.

According to official statistics from the Iranian Foreign Ministry, there are currently about 6,000 Afghans imprisoned in Iran. However, no information is available about the crimes or charges against these individuals.

The release of the Afghan prisoners comes amid ongoing talks between the Taliban and Iran to improve relations between the two countries The Taliban has said that it is committed to improving relations with Iran and other neighboring countries.

Iran has been a key player in Afghanistan, providing humanitarian assistance and security assistance to the Taliban.
